DOT  Motorcycle Helmets

The single most important piece of protective gear you can wear is a helmet certified to meet DOT standards. Safety shouldn't have to empty your wallet, so we have a great selection of helmets for you to choose from under $100.

You hope you never have to use your helmet, but accidents do happen. We can't predict when or what kind they will be. In any given year, a lot of riders give thanks that they were wearing helmets.

A good helmet makes riding a motorcycle more fun. This is the comfort factor. It cuts down on wind noise roaring by your ears, on windblasts on your face and eyes, and deflects bugs and other objects that fly through the air. It even contributes to comfort from changing weather conditions and reduces rider fatigue.

Wearing a helmet, no matter what the law says, is a reflection of your attitude toward riding. And that attitude is plain to see by other riders and non-riders alike. To ride a motorcycle means avoiding foolish risks.

Determine Motorcycle Helmet Size

1. Fit cloth tape measure snugly around widest part of head approximately 1" above the eyebrow, just above the ears and at the point on the back of your head that will give you the largest measurement for your motorcycle helmet size (see illustration).
2. Find your head size in the correct chart above, then order the corresponding helmet size per the motorcycle helmet product sizing.
3. Safety dictates that if your head size falls between two of the motorcycle helmet head size ranges listed, order the smaller motorcyle helmet size as a motorcycle helmet must fit snugly.

*If you don't have a tape measure, you can use a piece of string.  Wrap the string around your forehead about where you want the helmet liner to rest.  Then use a ruler or yard stick to measure the string!

Motorcycle Helmet Sizing Tips

Your motorcycle helmet fit is critical to the comfort and enjoyment of your helmet. It also plays a critical role in the performance of your helmet in the event of a collision.

Never or wear a motorcycle helmet without making sure you have a proper snug fit (not too tight, and not too loose - just right!)

There are several methods and tricks to size a motorcycle helmet. We recommends the following method:

1. Estimate your size: Get a tape measure and our sizing chart. Start with a  motorcycle helmet size you think will fit according to our measurements cross referenced to the chart.

2. Not too tight: Once you have your new motorcycle helmet in hand, put the helmet on by grasping the chin strap in each hand and pulling it on over your ears until you feel the top portion of the motorcycle helmet touch. Check for the following red flags: A. The motorcycle helmet immediately feels too tight. B. Your head does not touch the top of the motorcycle helmet. C. You can't pull the helmet down over your ears. D. It's painful in any way. If any of these apply, you probably need the next size larger.

3. Not too loose: Once you have found a motorcycle helmet that feels comfortable and snug, you must make sure that it is not too loose. To do this, securely fasten the chin strap, grasp the helmet chin bar or sides firmly with one hand and try to move the helmet from side to side and up and down. If the motorcycle helmet slides on your skin and hair, it is too large. If your scalp and skin want to move with the helmet, the fit is about right.

4. Just Right: One final check. Reach back to the back of the motorycle helmet and try to rotate the helmet as far down and forward as possible. Then as far backward as possible. If the motorcycle helmet feels as if it might slide off in either rection, the motorcycle helmet is either too big or the chin strap was not securely fastened.

Congratulations! If you passed these tests, you now have a properly fitting helmet that will maximize safety and minimize wind noise as well!
